1. Updated electrical regulations

Over the years the electrical safety requirements, wiring regulations and work practices have changed in New Zealand. What was once installed as standard is now seen as being unsafe.

2. Your switchboard is the central point of your homes electrical system

Your switchboard is the control centre for your homes entire electrical system. It operates everything from the lights to the jug. If your switchboard is faulty and unreliable it can affect the rest of your homes electrical system

3. Today’s homes require more power

Today your homes electrical demands and power consumption is significantly more than it would have been 20 years ago. We are using more appliances, meaning our electrical system needs to supply more power. Older switchboards can struggle to keep up with this increase in demand, which can lead to over heating and even electrical fires

4. Asbestos!

if your house was built before the 1980’s then there is a good chance that your switchboard has an asbestos backing panel. These panels can pose a risk to your family’s health if they are damaged or any work has to be done to the board that exposes dangerous asbestos fibers.

5. Ceramic fuses are un-safe

The older style re-wireable cermaic fuses found on old switchboards dont offer the level of protection that modern circuit breaks do. If a ceramic fuse is wired with the wrong size fuse wire then this can cause a serios risk of over heating and fire.

6. Which circuit is wich?

A new switchboard will have all the circuits correclty labled so as they can be easily identified. Should you, a member of your family, or one of your tradesmen ever need to isolate a circuit then having a labelled switchboard eliminates the guess work and keeps everyone safe.

7. Identifying other problem areas

If your switchboard is old and unsafe by todays standards, chances are that other areas of your electrical system will be outdated and possibly un-safe as well. The process of updating your switchboard will help to identify any other areas of impending problems across the rest of your home
